This explains what Talkova collects, why we collect it, who else sees it, and what you can ask us to do with it.
What we collect
What you give us
- Account details — your name, email address, and password. Passwords are hashed by Supabase; we never see them in plain text.
- Practice conversations — what you type, and what you say when you use the microphone. Speech is converted to text by your browser, and it's that text we receive and store.
- Payment details — handled entirely by Stripe. We receive a customer reference and your subscription status. We never see your card number.
What the service generates
- Your English level, as assessed by the AI tutor
- Grammar mistakes and the topics you practice
- Lesson summaries: key phrases, corrections, night audio scripts, homework
- How many conversations you have, and when
What we don't collect
No advertising trackers. No third-party analytics. No cookies beyond the one that keeps you signed in. We don't record audio from your microphone — only the text your browser transcribes.
Why we collect it
- To run the service — the tutor needs your conversation to reply, correct you, and build your lesson.
- To track your progress — remembering your level and past mistakes is what makes the practice adapt to you.
- To handle billing — knowing your plan is what unlocks paid features.
- To improve Talkova — aggregate patterns tell us which parts work and which don't.
We don't sell your data. We don't share it with advertisers.
Who else processes your data
Running Talkova means sending some of your data to companies that provide parts of the service:
- Anthropic — receives your conversation text to generate tutor replies and lessons.
- ElevenLabs — receives the tutor's reply text to synthesize speech.
- Supabase — stores your account, conversations, and progress.
- Stripe — handles all payments and card data.
- Netlify — hosts the site and runs its server functions.
- Cloudinary — serves the tutor avatar images.
Each of these has its own privacy policy. They process your data to provide their service to us, not for their own purposes.
Where your data lives
On servers in the United States. If you're using Talkova from outside the US, your data is transferred there and handled under US law.
How long we keep it
- While your account is open — we keep your conversations and progress, because that history is what makes the tutor adapt to you.
- After you close your account — everything is deleted within 30 days.
- Billing records — kept up to seven years, because tax law requires it.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us to:
- Show you a copy of everything we hold about you
- Correct anything that's wrong
- Delete your account and its data
- Export your data in a portable format
Email support@talkova.app and we'll respond within 30 days. There's no charge.
If you're in California
The CCPA gives you the right to know what we collect, to have it deleted, and to opt out of its sale. We don't sell personal information, so there's nothing to opt out of. We won't treat you differently for exercising these rights.
If you're in the European Union or United Kingdom
Under the GDPR you have the rights above, plus the right to object to processing, to restrict it, and to complain to your local data protection authority. Our legal basis is performing our contract with you (running the service) and legitimate interest (improving it and keeping it secure).
Security
Everything travels over HTTPS. Passwords are hashed. Our database uses row-level security, so one user's queries cannot reach another user's data. API keys live in server-side environment variables and never reach your browser.
No system is perfectly secure. If a breach ever affects your data, we'll tell you within 72 hours of discovering it.
Children
Talkova is not for children under 13. We don't knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child under 13 has an account, email us and we'll delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we make a significant change, we'll email you before it takes effect. The date at the top always reflects the current version.
